A couple of days ago, I went to the Danish National Museum to check out their new “Meet the Vikings” exhibit. It is a remake of the existing Viking exhibit, which is part of the regular prehistoric section of the museum. The remake was done in collaboration with the Danish designer Jim Lyngvild, a person who has become somewhat of a cultural icon for Viking Age-related modern interpretations. The exhibit received a lot of critique from historians, archaeologists, and others with some interest in keeping dissemination of historical subjects separate from flashy media and modern interpretations. There are some problems with the exhibit from a scholarly point of view, but it might surprise you what I, as a scholar of the Viking Age, have to say about it.
